NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY

The CIQS has continued its active participation in the process leading to the proposed federal prompt payment reforms by providing a Stakeholder Submission and following with verbal presentation at meeting in advance of a report prepared for Public Services and Procurement Canada titled “Building a Federal Framework for Prompt Payment and Adjudication” delivered on June 8, 2018 by R. Bruce Reynolds and Sharon C. Vogel with the Secretary of the Review being James K. Little.

Arif Ghaffur, PQS, FRICS, MCIArb, Editor of the Construction Economist, says “This is a relevant and current initiative that is bringing together key industry professional bodies, leaders and experts aimed at cross sharing information in a manner that benefits the Canadian construction industry - one that is sometimes fragmented, we are working hard to enable participants to make informed decisions.”

David Dooks, PQS(F), Chair of the CIQS, says “As an industry, Canadian construction is undergoing a number of fundamental reforms and we are pleased to partner with other professional bodies to ensure that we remain an important participant working alongside subject matter experts.”

As an Event Supporter at the Symposium, CIQS looks forward to participating with professional organizations in Canada that have experience as Authorized Nominating Bodies (ANB's) in the process of adjudication and expounding the ethos of Quantity Surveying at this landmark conference.

What the heck is virtual design and construction?
How BIM helps us (and can probably help you)

Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) have been buzzwords in the AEC industry for years, yet, the Canadian industry as a whole has been slow to adopt these processes. For Turner Construction Company, our use of VDC is driven by the specific needs of each individual project, and our use of BIM makes us better builders.

This presentation will outline the various processes and technologies we use to build digitally before building in reality, mitigating real world issues such as coordination complexities, rework and unforeseen circumstances that arise during the course of construction. From small tenant improvement projects through to complex multi-phased core and shell construction, this presentation will outline the tools we use to succeed.

Presenter: Kate Kirwan, CM-BIM
VDC Manager at Turner Construction Company

Kate Kirwan, CM-BIM - VDC Manager at Turner Construction CompanyKate Kirwan is the VDC Manager for Turner Construction Company in Canada. Her international work in the AEC industry began in Dublin, Ireland, where she worked as a conservation architect for the Irish government before moving to Canada in 2010. Her experience encompasses various construction types including complex new builds, renovations, and highly technical M&E builds. Kate works to promote BIM use throughout the AEC industry in Canada and she has collaborated with and presented to numerous consultant groups and organizations. Her previous speaking experience includes presentations at conferences such as Autodesk University, BuildEX Vancouver and the Lean Construction Institute (LCI) Canada.

The Project

5th Annual Construction and Project Management SeminarGround has been broken and construction of Calgary’s long-awaited $1.4-billion cancer facility is now underway with completion expected sometime in 2023. The 127,000-square-metre facility will significantly increase the capacity for cancer care for southern Alberta, with 12 radiation vaults, 160 in-patient beds, more than 100 patient exam rooms and over 100 chemotherapy chairs. With the population living longer than ever before, the frequency of cancer is increasing, resulting in more individuals and their families being impacted. Like our client’s interdisciplinary approach to cancer care, PCL believes that the collaborative nature of design-build projects produces benefits to our clients and their patients.

5th Annual Construction and Project Management SeminarScheduled for completion in 2023, the Calgary Cancer Centre will be the leading healthcare facility and educational hub for cancer services in southern Alberta. PCL is proud to work on a facility that will support an interdisciplinary philosophy that accommodates research, education, and patient and family-based care, focused on improved patient outcomes.

Featured Speaker

Toby HendrieToby Hendrie is currently the Project Director for PCL’s $1.1 billion Calgary Cancer Centre project. Toby started his career as a contractor’s quantity surveyor in the United Kingdom 30 years ago, and joined PCL upon moving to Canada in 1998. Since, he has received his Gold Seal certification in construction, and travelled internationally to work on one of PCL’s largest projects – the $1 billion Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, in Melbourne, Australia. Toby spent four and a half years on the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre project as Construction Manager, leading his team from contract award to opening day. Toby’s tenacity for construction excellence and innovation is evident in all projects he manages, motivating his team to be the best they can be, while safely completing projects on time and on budget. Toby’s presentation will provide some insight into the Victorian Comprehensive Care Centre and the Calgary Cancer Centre projects, the challenges that were faced, and the opportunities the design-build model can offer.
